Home Safety Tips

Let Us Help Forestall An ER Visit Or Hospital Stay

Assisted Living At Home

Part of the prevention plan of Assisted Living At Home is to go the extra mile to help prevent falls or mishaps in the home and avoid emergency room visits or hospital stays.

We offer a FREE home safety inspection. The goal is to uncover any safety or security risks before they become a threat to your health or to the health or your family.

For example, you might consider:

  • In the kitchen
    • Install C or D-type handles on cabinets and cupboards to make them easy to open
    • Add color-contrasted controls on the stove for those with low vision
    • Install a pressure-balanced, temperature-regulated faucet
  • In the bathroom
    • Install lever handles on sink, bathtub and shower faucets so they are easy to use
    • Use non-skid mats or non-slip strips on bathtub and shower floors.
    • Set the hot-water heater to 120 degrees to prevent scalding and to reduce energy consumption
    • Install grab bars in the bathtub/shower and toilet areas.
  • In the bedroom
    • Install telephone close to favorite chair and bed to improve accessibility.
    • Make sure bedside light is easily reachable from bed to prevent falling out while trying to reach it.
  • Living Room, Den, Stairs & Hallway
    • Rearrange furniture and remove any clutter to allow for clear, wide passageways
    • Use double-sided tape or carpet mesh to secure all rugs
    • Replace or remove any worn or torn carpeting
    • Raise furniture using leg extender or risers
    • Make sure stairs are well lit
  • Entrances & Exits
    • Increase lighting along pathways and entryway
    • Repair any holes, loose bricks or uneven areas of pathways
    • Install handrails on both sides of the steps
